Moms rally around an important cause!

Moms and mom supporters on Twitter and on tens and maybe hundreds of blogs have registered outrage at a Motrin ad that is, yes indeed, pretty offensive to moms who chose to use baby carriers (slings, Baby Bjorn). The gist is that carrying your baby hurts your back and it’s just a status symbol, but if you’re going to do it anyway then take some Motrin for the pain.
The ad is currently running here, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be for much longer.

My reaction? It’s a dumb ad. It’s misinformed and misleading (yes, wearing a 20lb baby can hurt, but geez, so can lifting a bag of groceries.) It’s a gross generalization (because yeah, there are women who go around wearing their babies because they think others will judge them if they don’t, but most do it because they know it’s good for baby and mom.)

But wow, overreact much? You’d think Motrin was evil incarnate! There’s no danger in using the product, no one is at risk for physical harm. It’s just bad marketing.

All this drama because of bad marketing?

Know what would be nice? Take that groundswell and use it to encourage people to buy a few extra items when they go shopping for Thanksgiving and donate them to their local food bank. Or anything else that might actually help people. Rather than use all this effort to fight against a pharmaceutical company that will just fire the ad agency and move on.

Ah, the voice of reason rings loudly…

  2. People generally have a lot of pent up tension, anger, even rage. Society doesn’t provide proper, healthy outlets for it, or teach people to accept that we are all somewhat like that – so, given the chance, they will from time to time jump on a cause / bandwagon / scapegoat or otherwise, AND KILL IT WITH THEIR RIGHTEOUS OUTRAGE!!! Same applies to liberals as to the most aggressive of gun-toting conservatives.

Page won’t load. Perhaps the flocking of the outraged to the site has brought it to a screeching halt?

  5. Interesting post. I have made a twitter post about this. Others no doubt will like it like I did.
